Brendan Burchard recently posted a quote on his Instagram that got me thinking. The quote stated, “Perhaps the universe isn’t giving you what you want because based on all of your distractions it is simply unclear what you are asking for.”
I’ve been asking for a whole lot lately, and some of what I’ve been asking for has been very contradictory. I haven’t been getting much of anything from the universe and I am pretty sure this is part of the reason why. I truly believe the universe can’t deliver if we are unclear about what we are asking for. Sometimes we are unclear because we are looking at too many options and want any or multiple of them to pan out. Sometimes we are unclear because we don’t actually want that thing but we think we do because that’s what everybody else wants. Or, sometimes we want the thing but we are so wrapped up in this, that, or the other and it isn’t the right time in our life. And sometimes the universe will deliver, but right now just isn’t the right time.
Or the universe will deliver but you haven’t done your part.
Yeah, you read that right. Sometimes you actually have to put in the work to get what you want. You can’t graduate high school or college without putting in work. The universe can help you get there, but you have to put in the work. You can’t maintain the job you have or promote to another job without putting work in. Again, the universe can help you get there, but you have to put in the work. You can’t find a new job if you don’t put in the work. You can’t lose weight if you don’t put in the work. You can’t get that side hustle going if you don’t put in the work. Do you follow me yet?
What are you asking the universe for right now? Are you asking for a lot of things or just one thing? If you are asking for a lot of things, the universe isn’t going to just know which thing you want the most.
No matter what you are asking for, you need to be completely clear on what is that you want. Are you distracted by other things? Are you letting that thing hang out there without putting in your part of the work?
Here’s an example I can share with you right now. I would like to make an impact on the lives of others through my Instagram. I would like to inspire women to be who they are, be the best they can be, and to grow from whatever past they are coming from. I cannot grow my IG to reach more people if I don’t post, if I don’t add hashtags, if I don’t actually provide value. The universe can’t help guide others to my IG if I don’t put the content out there that is relatable. I have to put in the work and I have to be clear on what I’m building.
If you feel stuck, if you feel like you can’t get motivated, if you just feel like nothing is going right for you, stop and figure out what you are asking for, where you are putting your time and energy, and if those things aren’t going right because maybe the universe is trying to steer you towards what you are asking for. You cannot rely solely on the universe to get what you want. You must put in the effort and set clear expectations and desires. Just like Trent Shelton says, it all starts with you.
